電影由市郊新發展區的高空俯瞰畫面展開，打工仔小林營營役役多年，終於在那裏買下一所獨立屋，一家四口搬進去。當他滿心歡喜期待幸福生活來臨之際，家人的行徑卻愈來愈令他擔憂：妻子「神神化化」，準備重考大學的兒子，終日躲在房間不問世事，小女兒則一心只想發明星夢（由初出道的工藤夕貴飾演）。某天爺爺突然搬來同住，因新屋不夠地方，小林決定動手在客廳挖掘地牢，卻又發現白蟻為患，頓時令全家陷入瘋狂……大學時代已經嶄露頭角的石井岳龍，用上當時日本的流行語「逆噴射」，以誇張荒誕的漫畫手法，毫不留情諷刺泡沫經濟底下，社會與家庭生活的失常異化，成為他在國際影壇注目之作。

The film begins with an aerial shot of a newly developed suburb. White-collar worker Kobayashi has finally bought a house here for his family of four after years of hard work. Just as he’s looking forward to a happy new life, his family’s strange behaviors test his limits: His wife is acting more eccentric than ever; his son has become a shutin as he prepares for college exams; and his daughter is obsessed with becoming a pop idol (ironically, actress Kudoh Youki really was an up-and-coming idol at the time). When his father suddenly moves in, Kobayashi must dig up a basement in the middle of the house to create more room, only to uncover a termite outbreak that will drive the whole family to the edge of insanity. Already known as a talent to watch during his college days, Ishii Gakuryū concocted a wild and entertainingly absurd satire that mercilessly takes down the traditional Japanese family unit and all its abnormalities in Japan’s post-bubble era. Not surprisingly, the film propelled him to stardom on the global film festival circuit.
